Northumbria in Bloom 2009

Award for Jubilee Park Victoria Crazy Golf in Jubilee Park was awarded the Northumbria in Bloom winner and Gold medal. The course was designed and built by Spennymoor Town Council staff and was opened by the Town Mayor, Miss S L Armstrong on June 27th 2009. The facility was partially funded by County Durham Environmental Network Trust and Lottery grant along with Spennymoor Town Council. If you haven’t been to the park recently it is well worth a visit.

 

Award for Tudhoe Cemetery

Tudhoe Cemetery was celebrating being awarded Runner Up in the prestigious Cemetery of the Year Competition in the category ‘Cemeteries 12 acres and below”.

The judges commented that it was ‘a well maintained site that was pleasing to the eye and had high grounds maintenance standards throughout’.The Awards are made annually by the Institute for Cemetery and Crematorium Management. Judging criteria includes design, maintenance, facilities, choice and initiatives in the community.

The Town Council is Awarded ‘Quality Town Council’ Status!

Quality Town CouncilThe Quality Council Scheme is a Government quality initiative
for all parish and town council’s in England. There are 7 tests that
the Council has to pass to be awarded Quality Council Status.
In summary these are:-

1. The Council must have an electoral mandate from the people of the township, this means that 80% of the councillors must have been elected and stood as a candidate for election.
2. The Council must have a qualified clerk, Mrs Wilson our clerk is a solicitor and holds a Diploma in Management Studies, a Masters Degree in Business Administration and an approved Certificate in Local Council Administration.
3. All council meetings must be publicly advertised and time must be allowed at each meeting for public participation and questions.
4. The Council has to demonstrate in a variety of different ways, that it communicated effectively and consults to actively involve its community in their activities.
5. The Council has to make publicly available an annual report, reflecting the Council’s plans, activities and achievements.
6. The Council’s statement of accounts must receive an unqualified opinion from their external auditor.
7. The Council must formally adopt the Code of Conduct relating to Councillors.

Local Children Design a Light for Christmas

Once again Spennymoor Town Council ran a local children’s competition to design a light for Christmas. Our partners in this venture were Blachere Illumination UK who supply the Town Council with all of their Christmas lights. Click the links below to view the winning entries.

Congratulations to Spennymoor Cemetery who received an award for Best Floral Feature from the Cemetery of the Year Awards 2006.

 


Parish Plan

The Town Council are facilitating the production of a detailed Parish Plan for the Town. Following a series of Public meetings a steering group made up primarily of members of the Community has now been set up to steer the process and it is our intention to consult with every household in the Township in order to ascertain the feelings, wishes and aspirations of the townspeople in developing a plan of action for the Town.
